Since playing Conquer Online my experience talking to people and amount of contacts has gone down each time.

Conquer Online had loads of people chatting in general chat, guilds, and /say.
Then I played maple story which had a bit less and only region chat and no central hub.
Then I played Guild wars where very few people talked, only in guild.
Then I played WoW, where absolutely no one talks almost, and where I can't access a general chat, just a region chat.
If you don't have a general chat in your MMO, but just region chat, and no central hubs, I might as well go play single player games.
Do you talk in new MMO?

Well some people just play with their friends, and are not to interested in chatting with others. Which I can see as normal, since I often do that with some of my friends. We just team up with each other and go about our own business.

There is also the factor that not everyone in the game may or may not know that language. Often times in mmos you will see people who do not speak English, in English mmos, and vise versa.

Thank you for the signature, VV.

I don't speak, I don't have anything to speak about and everyone else seems to have someone to talk to and have their own things to do.

Its mosly I believe due to other players past chat behavior that have lead other ppl not to chat than soloing. Players see this behavior and are turned away form wanting to chat.

I agree that previous chat behavior by other people has alot to do with it.

I used to be very open and chatty during my beggining MMO days (started with asheron's call) but i chat less and less, mostly because there are more and more immature people around that call everybody a retard and various other things. It's just a big disincentive to say anything.

As to the reason why this is happeing, i'm not really sure, maybe it's becuase to the wider acceptance of MMO's which brings in a more mainstream audience and well there are alot of jerks out there. Ofcourse it cou7ld be something entirely different

I chat every chance I guess. I find its the main reason that I play MMOs. I tend to find very nice people compared to what people here are saying. I think Guild Wars has a really nice community. People talk in every cooperative mission and are always willing to help out.

Since quests are introduced, almost all of the players are busy finishing their assigned task and they only got little talk when the quest needs a party. I guess when you are a low level and doesn't have a guild, It's sad to think that you are all alone and everyone that you attempted to make a conversation is ignoring you. But once you reach a higher level and have a guild, you will notice that the chatting never stops again with your fellow guildmates.

Yes agree. I notice it too when I'm only in a low level only few player talks to me (almost all of them are low level too). But when I reached high level and got a very active guild, chatting never ends in our guild.

I saw lots of people chatting in WoW. In Elwynn Forest and Barrens being one if not the most popular places. I know on my server Elwynn was most popular and there was a lot of chatting going on. This was on Emerald Dream, a high pop server.

WAR no one talks at all I heard, and its more like a single player RPG...this is just what I heard, I haven't played it.

In Eve Online people talk ALL the time. Helps that there is only one server where everyone plays on.

I haven't played too many free to play MMOs, but the ones I have people talked a lot. The ones I tried were the more popular F2P MMOs.

I think a lot of people are pretty shy when they first start to play MMOs, so it makes sense that they probably wouldn't talk very much. Talking usually has to rely on someone else to break the ice, and it's more or less likely depending on what game you're playing.

I know that for me, I don't usually talk too much when I'm trying out a new MMO because I see no need to go out and make friends in a game if I'm not even sure I'm going to stick with it. When I become more interested in the game and start to get addicted is when I open up a lot more.
