In the EQ2 forums lately there has been a lot of debate about the quality of that game. One of the main things people who dislike but have played EQ2 say is that the death penalty is not harsh enough. This is not about eq2 alone but a question for all those who want harsh death penalties and those who seem to think those that do not want them somehow are not true mmo players. There is often a lot of put down placed on those that do not like harsh death penalties. I have been in mmos since the begining UO and have played pretty much all of them. Some with steep penalties and some like WoW with easy ones.

What makes a harsh death penalty so fun for so many? I have heard the classic response "It makes the game more exciting." How is that exciting? Also why is it suggested that somehow those that do not like steep penalties either do not get it or are not good gamers? I do not see that connection but I have read it here dozens of times when this discussion comes up. Other then the "it makes the game more exciting" I have yet to hear why those that like harsh penalties enjoy it so much, as they claim.

It's true you need a harsh death penality otherwise you end up with gamers that just die & die like it's nothing to them. Forget healing or being worried about death just die, run back & start over

the reason some people like hard death results may vary. here are some instances i can think of off hand.

1. harsher the penalty, usally the less random pking done.
(for instance nexustk)you lose alot but you cant be pked while hunting. while games like wow youre expected to be killed at anytime so the death drop is alot lighter.

2. harsher death penalty is a pker's dream. the more the people drop and experienced lossed the happier the pker is usally. i think thats mainly cause their looking for self esteem online, but hey each their own.

3.Skill players tend to lean towards iron man type of mmorpgs. the hard the game the more skilled the players are in it.

4. with less penalty to death sometimes ppl will clean their houses, take a bath or even cook dinner while siting afk in a feild. if the penalties were harsher people would probally pay more attention to the game, instead half assing it.

thats just a few of my thoughts.

It makes rewards worth more in the long run you have no death penalty then all the popular/good items become common & there value decreases as lots are comming in & next to none are leaving the game.

I think a harsh penalty makes the game better mainly because it makes you want to survive more instead of not caring if you die. I've played games with some pretty harsh death penalties and I've liked them all.

Different games need different systems.
It depends if it is item or skill based and then also if it is PvE or more PvP based.
And then you need to decide if the game is for casual players or for hardcore gamers.
Overall PvP games live better with a lesser death penalty.
PvE games are better off with lesser death penalties if they want to have the casual gamers and maybe just open servers with harsher penalties for their hardcore crowd.
I am against harsher death penalties, but some systems sort of need it.

dont agree with death penalties, being killed and starting the quest all over again is bad enough.

i remenber being on flyff that its already difficult as hell to lvl and i was 99% and i got killed and i was back to 96% and it took me another hour to lvl up!

it just doesnt make sence to me

Permanent death indeed would be good in some theories but not with the games that we have these days. You have to change the game to add death and even then it's a little tricky... Since, you may die and then be reborn and continue doing what you did before but even if the death is permanent and let's say the game is modified to be a good game which doesn't only focus on grinding levels, you will still go and do what you did before dying...

I did once design a quite good game concept that has permanent death and it works quite fine, it actually makes the game even a little more fun, since some functions in the game are only available when someone dies.

It adds a bit more excitement to the game.

In my opinion harsher death penalty adds to the community and the game play of a game. If people are afraid of death then they can more easly be used to controll people and make the game more intresting.

Hey,
I personally really don't care. If I die and lose no experience, gold etc then I'm happy. I like being able to kill myself so that I can teleport straight back to town instead of taking the tedious walk back to town when it's like a five minute walk away.

i have read some topics like this in other forums, that if your hp reaches 0 the character is unconscious and he/she needs to bring back to town to be healed immediately, if not the character/player will die and if you wish to resurrect the character, you need to pay tons of money/gold to a priest.

HARSH death penalty = Stress

Decent death penalty = It's okay but I'd rather not get any penalty

No death penalty = Boring

Depends on how harsh where talking I'm ok with item lose as it promotes the gathering of more items & replaying the game elements to get items back. It also helps keep there value & prestige up if there well sort after items. Item degradation isn't a harsh enough penalty to me though.

What I'm not ok with is permanent death where you have to start all over again or exp lose I earned those abilitys & you making me grind there again is just going to annoy me to no end especially if it's a game where it takes months/years to get high.

It is heard that in GC, the director of Diablo 3 said, Diablo 3 will changge the death penalty, he said, when ppl die, they will lost lots of money and equipment, that would be so cruel, and they will find a balance between death penalth and ppl's mental resilience.

I don't know, maybe harsh death penalty will add the interesting into a MMOs, but sometimes it will hurt players, they maybe abandom this MMOs, that will be a big loss to MMOs's operator
