I begin by stating -- this post and thread is about the way gaming was. I may be a dinosaur in the MMO community at this time, but I remember the days of:

Logging in to play ONE character. Having a limit less amount of content to play and achieve. Grouping with the same people over and over again because we were virtual friends. Having to earn levels, actually camping gear that matters.

Its funny how things have changed. Its funny how even the new gamers are beginning to wonder the same things as some of the people who have been playing for years. I welcome all the new and old gamers to take a stand. To begin to post in this thread about some of your favorite old characteristics about MMOs that are no longer around -- or have hit the back burner with respect to the market. Please lets avoid the flames. I am not here to rock the boat, but maybe more to remember days past.

I think the discussion should begin with -- I remember when leveling to the cap of a game wasn't the say all end all of the game. I remember when it was difficult to obtain RARE items. I remember when MMOing was about NOT having the same equipment of the guy next to me. I remember when following directions mattered. I remember when developers had unique encounters -- or a semblence of such.

Run with it ....

I remember when games used to have not many ccf'ers and people that shout spamming " 100000000 gold for 1 usd at _______.com"
I remember when honest players were respected over hackers and scammers that had money that now spoke louder than honesty..

Now for some less pessimistic memories

I remember when cash shop only gave a small boost rather than a major advantage ...
When grinding was not the only option in order to progress in the game ..
When games weren't generic (but i really can't blame them as after a while.. they just run out of ideas or just are necessities)

I remember when MMO's where about having a good time...

I remember when you took your time leveling and having fun with your friends as you go, not racing to the level cap and then just quitting the game.

Hey.

I remember when everything on MMORPGs wasn't so laborious and how I never used to get bored after roughly 3 hours of gameplay. Repetitiveness yet again, rearing its ugly head!

I remember when people used to roleplay in MMOs.
I remember when people gave their characters normal/fantasy names instead of funny ones.
I remember that I used to chat way more than actually grind.

I remember when graphics didn't matter.

I remember when each and every level up boosted self-esteem.

I remember when making money was a challenge.

I remember when we were saving a princess.

I remember when games weren't completely self-explanitory.

I remember when a boss took 3 or 4 tries to beat.

I remember when PKing wasn't a sport.

I remember when Left-Clicking and Right-Clicking did the same thing.

I remember the first day I played an MMO. Ever since that day there have been changes. Changes that either helped the gameplay or took away the fun. Sometimes even both.

But most of all, I remember being a 9 year-old boy who got extremely excited over 100 gold coins.

-I remember building long term relations with people (back in EQ days, played with a lot of those people for 7-8 years)

-I remember being new and learning how to play games rather than knowing how the system works.

-I remember when MMORPGS were actually difficult, and you had a risk of dying with downtime in between kills.

Nice post, brought back some memories :)

In my opinion, online games are getting to complex, if you get so much stuff to do at one time, you will eventually get lost you dont know where to turn and you will feel bored.

I can compare to playing GTA 3 and GTA San Andreas, you can play GTA 3 that its not to complex and have a blast, but if you play San Andreas you get so much things to do as getting a girlfriend, go to the gym, buyng clothes etc etc and you will feel bored becouse you get a sence of real life that you are obligated to do that stuff to progress, mmorpgs are missing the core of the game experience to turn in to a more complex but pointless way.

At least that its my opinion

*Sorry for not using the I remenber thingy*

I remember when the folks at PC gamer were predicting that MMOs would be a spiritual return to the social roleplaying of D&D, but enhanced by the fact that you can do it in an incredible digital environment, with different people from all over the world.

I'm still trying to figure out quite why it's not like that, in fact. Some days it seems like people would rather troll, grief, or generally be a jerk than make friends. Is it really preferable to get bad attention easily than to have to work for good attention?

On a cheerier note - Great topic! Due to monetary and connectivity issues, I never got to play an MMO in the early days. I'm very happy to get to hear about how things were different back then!

I remember that when you logged in, you were welcomed by your friendly guild...where level does not matter.

I remember that my guild was like my family, helping each other out with not just in-game things, but personal issues.

I remember a time when Cash Shop stuff didn't give absurd amounts of "uber" items

Oh and another guild one,

I remember when my guild gave a **** about me and that they actually remembered my name...
When MMORPG was fun....
