So you just started Grand Chase? Awesome, welcome to one of the best online 2d arcade style and mission driven games by Ntreev.
I will break this FAQ up into Game FAQs and Troubleshooting FAQs.
GAME FAQs
1. Q: I can only select from 3 players, and they are all girls! Where are the guys?
1. A: The only 3 playable classes currently released at Elesis (Melee fighter), Lire (Ranged archer), and Arme (Magic user). Ryan, Lass, and Ronan will be released in patches as the mission and quest storyline progresses.
2. Q: What do the stars mean when I select a mission?
2. A: The stars represent the difficulty of the mission. 1 star rating means the monsters are the lowest minimum level for that dungeon. 5 stars means you might want to bring some friends to help you tackle the baddies! Note currently in GC-US mission ratings only go up to 3.
3. Q: What are skills?
3. A: Each character has a set of skills they can use, located at the top left of your screen under your MP bar. If you are Elesis or Lire, as you damage enemies your MP bar fills up. Once you reach the first bar you may use your level 1 skill by holding the Z button till it fills up, then releasing the Z button. The same goes for your level 2 and level 3 skills.
Arme has a passive ability to recharge her MP bar if she is not doing any movement (denoted by light emitting from her chest) as well as gaining MP when she does damage to enemies. Arme also has White and Black magic at her disposal. You can switch between White magic and Black magic by hitting the X key. You will notice the change in the skills she can cast at the upper left under your MP bar.
4. Q: What is GP?
4. A: GP is the in-game currency used to purchase equipment and gems. You get GP by completing missions and besting others in PvP!
5. Q: I see people throw people in PvP, but I can't in missions. Is this right?
5. A: Yes, throwing, or "gripping" is a PvP only move each character can do by standing next to your opponent and pressing towards them + Z. So if you were to the left of an opponent you would press >Z. You can also Dash grip people, it's a little more tricky but follows the same basis as normal grip. If you are Elesis you can grip people mid-air with her air dash.
6. Q: Sometimes my attacks don't hurt other players in PvP. Why is this?
6. A: Many factors can make someone invincible in PvP. It's important to understand this to a) increase your own survivability and b) counter their tricks.
Some factors that make you invincible include:
a) While gripping someone both players are invincible for the duration of the grip animation.
b) Certain skills have invincible frames (A frame is a single part of an animation). If you cast a skill there is a certain amount of time during the animation that you will be invincible. This is very important to learn to recognize.
c) There is an invincibility item in the game if Items are turned on.
d) Arme's dash (Phantom dash) makes her invincible until she comes out of it.
e) Lire's double jump makes her invincible until she hits the ground.
f) Arme's ground quake makes her invincible from the start of the animation to when she slams her fist on the ground. Once she hits her fist on the ground she stops being invincible even though the ground quake itself is still happening.
7. Q: Sometimes my Elesis goes berserk. How do I activate this?
7. A: Elesis has a passive ability to go berserk when she is bombarded by arrows. Every time you are hit with an arrow a little bar appears next to your Elesis that raises the more arrows you get hit by within a certain window. If you only get hit with 1 arrow the bar will fill briefly and fall again. 2 arrows in a row will make the bar fill once, then once more from the 2nd arrow. Usually 3 to 4 arrows in rapid sucession will fill the bar up to the top which will make Elesis go berserk. Berserk is almost screen-wide and does a small amount of damage and stuns everyone on the screen.
8. Q: What is defense?
8. A: Defense is a passive ability that Elesis has when being attacked from the front by arrows. It reduces damage with a chance to deflect arrows back at their owner.
9. Q: What is the % by my name mean when I'm in a room for PvP? What is the letter designate? What is that symbol near my name?
9. A: All of these denote your ranking when fighting.
- The symbol increases as your level increases, going from bronze to silver to gold, and then changing symbols. The letter designate tells you what your stat rating is.
- The rating scale is A+ through F. F is a naked character with base stats. It increases up to A+ as you gain more stats (stats are Attack / Defense / Vitality).
- The % is simply your win/loss percentage.
10: Q: What are the game types in PvP mean?
10: A: There are 2 archetypes of PvP in this game currently: Survival and Team, with 2 subtypes for each: VS and Tag.
Survival is basically a free for all. Scoring is by who survives last based on how many people are playing.
- For 1-3 players, last person alive wins.
- For 4-5 players, last person alive and the person in 2nd place wins.
- For 6 players, last person alive and 2nd and 3rd place wins.
Team seperates people into White and Purple teams. Teams start on opposite ends of the map, the objective to decrease the other teams life totals to 0 before yours!
VS mode simply means that you only get 1 character with an amount of lives based on which map you are playing on.
Tag mode lets you select 2 characters (you select them at the top right.) You can switch between characters (with a 3 second delay between switching) by pressing the "C" key. You only get 1 life with each character, so choose wisely!
11: Q: What is the difference between group loot and free loot?
11: A: For missions it is often better to have free loot on when you are partying with friends and group loot when you are with people you don't know. Group loot randomly divvies equipment loot out among the people with you. Free loot means whoever walks over the item gets it.
Being able to have free loot on means that you can get equipment you need for your character when it drops. As long as you sort out who needs what before you start the game this can prevent the random group loot function giving people loot they don't need. Since you cannot trade in this game currently this is the best way to keep frustration low while still enjoying the game.
12. Q: Wait there is no trading in Grand Chase?
12. A: Not currently. The only way to get items is to find them yourself.
13. Q: What is the box when you are questing and who gets what from it?
13. A: The box is where all the timer-expired items, dust, aging cores and special items go to. If you stay for the completion of the mission (or failure of the mission) it is divided out between the people of the party randomly. You can opt not to "roll" on any of the items by clicking the "X" instead of the dice symbol under each item you don't want.
14. Q: What are aging cores and gems?
14. A: Aging cores are needed to upgrade scrolls for your weapon and armor that drop from bosses. Gems are purchased and used to upgrade necklaces and armlets you can buy from the shop.
15. Q: What are rune scrolls?
15. A: Scrolls drop from bosses and can be created by combining dust and required chaos gems (that drop from bosses rarely when they are defeated). They are upgraded with aging cores.
16. Q: How does upgrading work?
16. A: Upgrading inherently works the same whether it's a rune scroll or a necklace/armlet.
- For rune scrolls you need to meet the minimum amount of aging cores needed to upgrade. Aging cores are found as you quest and do missions. If you have them you just click reinforce. As you increase from +1 it takes subsequently more aging cores to reinforce. So if you are going from +5 to +6 it will take 5 aging cores, whereas from +1 to +2 only takes 1.
- For necklaces/armlets you need to meet the minimum amount of gems needed to upgrade. Gems are purchased through the shop under Schooling for 1000 GP each. If you have them you just click the UP button next to your necklace or armlet. From 1-3 it takes 2 gems, from 3 on up it takes 3 gems.
The probability of success diminishes as you get higher, with the chance to outright drop the rune down to 0 (in the case of runes) or breaking the necklace/armlet (in their respective case). If you break a necklace or armlet it cannot be upgraded further. Runes dropping to 0 simply means you must start over from there.
17. Q: What is the difference between Old rune scrolls and normal brave rune scrolls?
17. A: Normal brave rune scrolls can technically be upgraded past 9. In addition to that normal brave rune scrolls have a higher stat attribution per upgrade. For example an old brave rune armor might give you 4 defense up per reinforcement, whereas a normal brave rune armor gives you 5 defense up per reinforcement.
18: Q: My character say it's FATAL, what does that mean?
18: A: Fatal simply means that you are down to 1 HP. This has benefits as well as drawbacks. While FATAL you cannot be killed with arrows. You also cannot regenerate HP. Any knockdown effect (Such as the 5th attack of Lire's ZZZZZ sequence, or Lire's >>Z) will kill you, so don't think you are unkillable by Lires!
19: Q: People talk about Ottoshot (or Autoshot), what is it?
19: A: Otto/Autoshot is a design flaw with character animation attacks in which you "fall" through whatever supporting platform your character is on while at the same time attacking. The result is the beginning of an attack animation and your character slightly falling through the platform they are on, then resetting. You repeat this process precisely and you can attack indefinately. Easiest to do with Elesis, although every class has the ability to Otto/Autoshot.
More to come!
