Save City of Heroes!

Sep 6, 2012 1:18 am
Since NCsoft announced the shutdown of City of Heroes, many players have expressed their regret, but not only that, MMOsite received an email from Tony Vazquez today, the Administrator of Titan Network:

To News Editor:

Last Friday, August 31, NCsoft announced the sunsetting of the online role-playing game City of Heroes and the closing of its publisher, Paragon Studios.  I am writing to let you know that we, the players, are currently organized and engaged in an effort to convince NCsoft to work with us to keep the game alive, either by continuing operations of the game or by releasing the game property to be sold to another publisher or studio.  We members of the City of Heroes community have poured over eight years of our creative energy into the game, we strongly feel that it is our "Mona Lisa."  We are hopeful that NCsoft will be see both the financial and community relations benefits of allowing the game to continue, even if it is not in the long term plans for it to be part of the NCsoft portfolio.

I think other game portal sites received the email too, the players are doing their best to save City of Heroes! Tony said they have taken to reach out to NCsoft and some upcoming projects and events.

Which side are you on? Do you want to do something to help save the game?

Please share you position and ideas below!

Gamers Rally to Save City of Heroes

What happens when a virtual world is condemned to oblivion?  Dedicated players of the online game City of Heroes struggle for the very survival of their city.

Mountain View CA, September 6, 2012: The online heroes of Paragon City are currently in an epic battle.  Not against the forces of crime and evil that they have been facing for eight years, but against the decision of a company that is preparing to turn off the game servers and end a game that has been running since April 2004.

NCsoft, the publisher of City of Heroes, announced last Friday that it is shutting down Paragon Studios, the game development studio responsible for City of Heroes.  Operation of the flagship will cease by November 30 due to a realignment of NCsoft’s focus.

To its community, City of Heroes is more than just a game, it is a vibrant, welcoming community.  City of Heroes was the first online role-playing game for many gamers, and introduced them to the wonders of flying through the skies and battling epic menaces with friends.  City of Heroes has brought together families, offered comfort during troubling times, and inspired charities that have raised nearly $30,000 for children, members of the armed forces, and to fight hunger.

The City of Heroes community quickly rallied and formed a campaign to save the game from virtual extinction.  “We’ve been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years.  It’s time to do it one more time,” said Tony Vasquez administrator of the Titan Network, an alliance of City of Heroes fan sites (http://paragonwiki.com), and one of the organizers of the Save Paragon City! campaign.

Through social media outlets, fan web sites, and the City of Heroes official game forums, players have been organizing projects and events to convince NCsoft to allow the game to continue, exploring options including selling the game to another game publishing company or development studio.   The “Keep NCsoft from shutting down City of Heroes!” petition initiated by a community member has gathered over 12,600 signatures and continues to grow. (http://change.org/petitions/ncsoft-keep-ncsoft-from-shutting-down-city-of-heroes) In addition, players have begun a letter writing campaign to NCsoft to demonstrate the reach of their numbers and convey the impact City of Heroes has had on their lives.

City of Heroes players have a non-stop schedule of activities to show their support.  Saturday, September 8th, players are organizing an in-game “Unity Rally” and Paragon Appreciation costume contest in which players will dress up as their favorite Paragon Studios staff member (http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=296768). This event will take place on the Virtue server starting at 5:00pm EDT.  Organizers expect that this could be the biggest costume contest in online gaming history.  Other ongoing projects beginning this week include a crowd funding drive in which the community has pledged to financially assist acquiring the game from NCsoft and partnership discussions with industry leaders regarding acquisition of the City of Heroes game property.

If they really want to save the game... I really hope that they actually save the game...

I remember when they closed Tabula Rasa... Someone tried to buy the IP and everything else to run the game, and NCSoft said no because their hate against Richard Garriott was bigger than their actual brains... gg NC...

there's nothing to save, if a game doesn't generate enough revenue it gets axed

COH is a good F2P,just delete the Restrictions and let a other Publisher do it (im sure PWE plan to take em )

There is other alternatives besides closing it down because it doesnt generate enough revenue...

DCUO took the F2P way... The same is going to happen with SWTOR...

If F2P fails then sell the game to another company and you make one last revenue paycheck out of the game... It is kinda unfortunate that NCSoft is so narrow minded, they keep closing down the games without exploring other alternatives, so far their only smart move was making Aion F2P... but thats it... The rest is just a trainwreck...

The only credit that I can give NCSoft is the fact that CoH is kinda old.

that might be the reason though. It's not just NCsoft you look at Sony's treatment of games that didn't  generate revenue (Vanguard Planetside 1) which hasn't had any content added and is pretty much on life support. Companies aput games on life support or axe it when it's not generating money. (COH is right now f2p and still doesn't generate much revenue by NCSOFT standard)

As I said... NCSoft is famous for the massive plug pulling with no other alternatives... they did the same with Tabula Rasa... It goes beyond that!!!! They even framed the producer of Tabula Rasa...

I'm just saying it's not just NCSOFT, every mmorpg company does that with a game that didn't live up to the revenue expectation

According to NCsoft's own earning statements (http://global.ncsoft.com/global/ir/quarterly.aspx) CoH earns about $11 million a year, compared to GW1 only makes about $6 million a year.

CoH doesn't make a lot, but it is earning money. Considering that NCsoft posted a loss for the first time this year, it just seems stupid to stop something that earns you $10 million year.

hello they still have to feed staffs right? maybe the team in COH is bigger than GW1.
11 million revenue maybe only 0.5 million gross margin only.
GW1 maybe having 6 million revenue but maybe their gross margin turns to be higher.
They are too many factors in overhead cost

the best you can do is for city of heroes to be taken in by another publisher if they are willing to buy the rights to the game. it is very unlikely for NCSoft to do anything about it.

It's kind of sad for me to see that CoH is scheduled to be shut down. CoH was the first MMO I played, and one of the only ones that has managed to hold my attention for more than a few weeks. I played consistently from '05 - '10, then off and on since then. While I don't play as much as I used to, I still enjoy going back to Paragon City every so often to look in on the characters I made. Hopefully, they will be willing to sell to someone who will keep it going. I guess time will tell.

I would be interested in which people think about the idea that online communities should have rights against this kind of shutdown: http://americanscience.blogspot.com/2012/12/should-online-communities-have-rights.html
