MMORPGs versus WoW

Jun 25, 2012 12:24 am
It's funny, if youre a player who hates wow you can come up with a plethora of reasons it's not as good as other games that are out. But why then does wow keep getting mentioned? Why, after all these years are we still going back to compare new titles to wow? Graphics, loot systems, gameplay, economy, etc... All must check themselves against wow. I think it's more than "wow sets the standard" it's wow IS the standard. The game is awesome, it has gone down hill so fast because of the changes blizzard makes to accomedate the general demographic of the majority playing the game. Think about this fact for a moment; what is the general demographic for wow players today? It's children 18 and under. What do mature titles like Aion or B&S have for their demographics? People with jobs, with children, with relationships, and responsibilities. Children under 18 do not have these, they have free time and lots of it, so wow is willing to lose many mature players for the numbers. And since it costs to play wow and they have the largest population, this allows them to create new and stronger titles to compete for the mature gaming slot. This allows them to control the highest amounts of servers, customer service, the best game designers (who want to make money-face the music) etc... Diablo 3 looks and plays amazing. They didn't just whip it together and throw it out there like every new mmorpg has in the last 5 years. They spent more time and more development on it so that it will compete for the gamers it lost from wow. Blizzard is intelligent and knows what they're doing. You could spend all the time in the world trying to take down wow with a more mature title but you'll never win because you're fighting a mountain that doesn't stop growing. Solution for all you whiners: build a new mountain. Create a system that mimics blizzard's and use it to fuel your mature game titles. It's the only way it can be.

Because WoW was first of its kind. Just like how every great boxer is compared to Ali, and how every great basketball player is compared to Jordan. WoW was something that was never done before. On top of that Blizzard did a hell of a job keeping it up. Soon millions of people were playing and millions of dollars were won in tournaments. WoW WAS great. New games make wow look sooooo out-dated but since it was what started everything it must be compared to everything else.

    I agree with Bakalicious.
WoW left a big trace in the mmorpg history.
It's hard not to mention it, since it had most of the contents a gamer would look for in a game.
    Let it be .
I compare anything to everything and history is history, so I don't really mind hearing: "OMG WoW copy cat!"

This is what happens when you let a company sit on the top for so long.

WoW is considered to be the dominant force of MMOs due to their large subscriber base despite them switching from the term "subscribers" to "active accounts". many other MMOs wish they had as many players as WoW still.

WoW wasn't the first of it's kind. Wasn't Everquest the first?

UMMM I never played Everquest, but there must be a reason why WoW is what it is now compared to Everquest.

Well, WoW was like the first land on the moon in 1969 by Neil Armstrong... They simply made some serious history...

Everquest was the big P2P MMO before WoW, but the numbers were still vastly inferior until they went F2P with an optional payment system
