SWTOR's high resolution texture setting is a lie!

Jan 11, 2012 10:59 pm
Many SWTOR players are crying foul after discovering that the game does not offer high-resolution textures, a feature which was stripped out following the game's beta. The removal of this feature was not immediately noticed, as the game's settings  still gave players the option between "high" and "low" texture quality. However, some savvy persons dug through the game's code, discovering that what the final release toutes as "high quality" is equivilent to what was termed "medium quality" during the beta.

Here is what Biawore's Senior Community Manager Stephen Reid responses to this issus:

"There are only supposed to be two texture choices, 'Low' and 'High'. This replaces the original three-choice preference of Low/Medium/High because in reality, there was never supposed to be a 'Medium' choice - that was a bug" Stephen claims, going on to mention how high quality textures affected game performance so badly that a compromise was made, the high quality setting resulting in high resolution textures during cinemas, though not actual gameplay. "Yes, we had a small UI bug that unfortunately caused confusion over how the game is intended to work. The textures you're seeing in the course of normal gameplay are optimized for that mode of play. The textures you're seeing during cinematics are also optimized for that mode of play(...)The development team is exploring options to improve the fidelity of the game, particularly for those of you with high-spec PCs."

Let's see whether a fix is actually planned or just another lie to cover it...

Consider the flip-side.Is there not a threshold on free-to-play oiffrengs as well? You're ultimately competing for a gamer's attention, their time. Through this time, you either seek a sum up-front, or back-end. But that's all it is. The competition isn't in securing the cashflow (it's been proven that F2P grosses more than sub via impulse-shopping), because in either situation a cashflow will exist. Maximizing that cashflow, via whichever route was chosen, is an exercise in making a product that can be effectively marketed for the gamer's time. Markets everywhere see saturation, and it isn't so much a struggle between payment plans as it is a struggle to expand the market.Ahtchu recently posted..

lol, Impulse Shopping... That sounds plausible... but if that is so easy as you say, then why in the hell a lot of publishers keep asking for a monthly fee?

Hey Orman thanks for the turtexe pack. Will definitely come in handy!I've noticed you've slowed down on the amount of weekly resources you've been making hope everything is ok and going well? Just busy I'm guessing!! :-)

By the way, the texture pack was released some time ago.... Now the swtor community have a nice high res texture pack around... One that is way too high...
