SWTOR PvP tips for beginners

Dec 26, 2011 11:44 pm
I noticed that many ppl are interested in playing on Warzones. However, only a few of us rly know how to play well in the PvP zones and some of us even dont know which class is suitable for Warzones. Personally, Ive just played this game for about one week and I dont how much knowledge about SWTOR PvP. And when I searched on google, I find the tips for PvP. So I just re-post it here. Hope it will be helpful to you.

Play as a Healer

If you are worried about winning games in Warzones, you should consider respeccing as a healer in PvP. The one thing that Rift: Planes of Telara taught me about PvP is that there are never enough healers to go around.

Since every class in the game is a viable DPS class and is good at damage-dealing in PvP, nearly all of the healers dry up. You would think that so many classes in SWTOR being able to be healers would help bring healers to Warzones, but what happens is most players who heal in flashpoints and dungeons come to Warzones to blow off steam and have a bit of fun.

The end result is there are almost no healers in any given Warzone, and since healers are a huge advantage in games like Huttball, being a healer for Warzones when you are serious about winning is a serious advantage for your team.

Play in 2s or 3s

This goes in conjunction with SWTOR PvP Tip #1: play in pairs or trios in order to have a lot of success. Sometimes full pre-made groups do not end up winning a lot since you wind up against other pre-made groups. You also typically have to wait longer for queues if you are a pre-made.

However, 2-3 good, coordinated players can often roll through pick-up groups, get fast queues, and win early and often. The trick is to get a healer and a DPS class or two which really shine when healed.

Typically, that is the Warrior-like class (Sentinel for the Republic, Marauder for the Empire), since these classes can deal a lot of damage but often succumb quickly to focus-fire in group PvP.

YOu can make the group really shine by adding in a third person, one who specializes in control, such as a caster or ranged class. These can help control or stun opponents while you cap an objective or take down a carrier.

If you don’t have a partner, you can spec into a healing class and simply find the best-geared and skilled players. Just ask in general chat if someone wants a pocket healer, but say you will only heal the best skilled and geared players.

Even the highest-ranked and geared players on your server will often take you up on this offer, even if you are a newbie. Asking a well-geared Sentinel or Marauder if they want a healer for PvP is like asking a kid if they want candy: the answer is going to be yes.

On the flip side, healers do not like to heal bad or undergeared players. If you are a great DPS, you can ask in chat to team-up with a healer and mention that you are good at the game and have good gear and you can usually pick up a healer that way.

If you are a newbie DD, try to get in a larger pre-made or just grind in pick-up games for awhile until you can improve your skills and your gear.

Remember: Play to Win!

Many players go into warzones in Star Wars The Old Republic with the goal of simply just fighting random players and not paying much attention to how they can win the game.

This is not a very good strategy, as you can be much more effective should you play the game to win. However, at the same time, staying behind to guard nodes and the like is not what I mean either as sometimes that can be a very effective strategy. You to objectively evaluate your skills, class, and equipment against the Warzone you are playing in to discover what you are most effective at doing.

For example, if you are a well-geared player who happens to play a burst class, sometimes simply running around and taking people out is the most effective use of your time, especially if your character is really strong. Just think about it – if you are good and strong enough to take out 2 players, even if you take yourself out of the game to do it, you have now turned an 8v8 Warzone into a 7v6, with your team having a 1 person advantage. This is playing to win.

On the other hand, if your character is completely fresh to the max level and very weak, you might consider being the one to guard a node, or trying to “ninja” objectives in the heat of battle. This can help out your team in a big way, especially if you are not strong enough yet to take on other players head to head.
